Expend4bles: A Lazy Exercise in Meat-and-Potatoes Filmmaking

Listen to the Article

Remember "The Expendables" franchise? Well, get ready for another lackluster installment with "Expend4bles." This time, the action stars from the '80s and '90s are joined by a new, lackluster cast to save the world once again. But don't hold your breath for any excitement, because this film is a lazy and uninspired mess.

Forgettable Franchise Returns

The original "Expendables" was a surprise hit, combining familiar action stars like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger with current favorites like Jason Statham and Jet Li. The result was a fun, old-school shoot-em-up that appealed to fans of the genre. But the two sequels that followed failed to live up to the first film's promise. And now, almost a decade later, we have "Expend4bles."

n Absence of Effort

One look at "Expend4bles" and it's clear that the filmmakers didn't put much effort into this installment. With a screenplay that feels like it was written with a Mad Libs template and uninspired direction, the film oozes with indifference. The action sequences are staged in a flat and dull manner, further hindered by subpar CGI. It feels less like a continuation of a profitable franchise and more like a cheap TV pilot that was thankfully scrapped.

Missed Opportunity

What's most disappointing about "Expend4bles" is the missed opportunity to showcase the iconic action stars that made the franchise popular in the first place. Instead, the film focuses on a new cast of lesser-known actors, with only a few exceptions. Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais provide some much-needed thrills, but the rest of the newcomers fail to impress. And Megan Fox, in particular, delivers a lackluster performance that does little to elevate the film.

n Embarrassing Finish

From start to finish, "Expend4bles" is an embarrassment. The lack of effort and contempt from the cast and crew is evident in every scene. It's a film that should have never been made, and it's clear that the franchise has worn out its welcome. Don't waste your time or money on this forgettable installment.

Now playing in theaters.
